Depression is more than just feeling down. It can be a sign of serious mental illness that negatively impacts moods, feelings, actions, perceptions and self-esteem. Although the precise cause is not understood, it is commonly thought that mental disorders, including clinical depression, are caused by a complicated interaction and mixture of biological, psychological, and social influences. These are the types of issues that are involved with depression treatment.
“Feeling” depressed does not necessarily mean you have depression. Situational depression, medically known as “adjustment disorder with depressed mood”, often works itself out in time. Talking about the problem, evaluating and making changes, assists recovery. Studies show that depression is more prevalent amongst women than men, the female-to-male ratio being around 2 to 1.
Clinical depression, medically known as “major depressive disorder”, is a more severe condition and can develop from situational disorder if it is not resolved. Here are some symptoms of clinical depression:
- Increased feelings of sadness
- Loss of interest in daily activities
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Changes in sleep patterns – insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, over sleeping
- Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, self-loathing
- Difficulty thinking, making decisions, concentrating
- Thoughts of death-suicide
- Anger, irritability, restlessness
- Pessimism and hopelessness
- Reckless behavior
- Physical symptoms can include fatigue, muscle aches, cramps, headaches, back pain, digestive problems
For a diagnosis of clinical depression, certain criteria must be met. Five or more symptoms from the list above must be consistently present over a two week period for a diagnosis of clinical depression. Clinical depression can also involve delusions, hallucinations, and other psychotic disturbances. Clinical depression can be a life-long affliction requiring long-term management, starting with a comprehensive rehab program for depression treatment.
When depression is having a negative effect on family, other relationships, work, or simply preventing any enjoyment of life, then the person needs depression treatment. Often talking to a professional can ease symptoms, or at the least prevent things from becoming worse. If there are any suicidal thoughts or feelings whatsoever, rehab help should be sought out immediately to treat the depression.
Treating Clinical Depression
There is no a medical “test” to establish if a person suffers from clinical depression. Diagnosis usually starts with a detailed history and physical exam. Several elements contribute to the occurrence of depression:
- Past life experiences
- Environmental factors
One in six people will experience depression in their lifetime. Depression can occur at any time. It is common for depression to first surface in the late teens to mid-twenties. Depression and-or other disorders may run in the family. There are a lot of therapy variables when it comes to depression treatment.
