Psychosis is a condition of the mind where someone doesn’t know what is real and what is not real. Symptoms might include delusions, or false beliefs, and hallucinations, seeing or hearing things that are not there. Psychosis is not an illness, but a symptom of a physical or mental illness.

Some possible causes of psychosis:

  • Mental illness – schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Prescription drugs – steroids and stimulants
  • Brain injury, tumor or cyst
  • Extreme stress or trauma
  • Hormones/sleep – postpartum psychosis
  • Neurological illness – Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease
  • Some types of epilepsy
  • Dementia – Alzheimer’s disease

The Goal of Psychosis Treatment

Psychosis affects behaviour and disrupts a person’s life, making them tired and overwhelmed. Hallucinations and delusions seem very real and can make an individual feel nervous, scared, threatened and confused. Depending on the cause, psychosis can come on suddenly or gradually. The lengths of episodes may be a few hours or days, but psychosis can go on for weeks, months or even years without appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis at Fraser Valley Wellness greatly improves long-term, successful psychosis treatment.

Goals of psychosis treatment at Fraser Valley Wellness Center:
