Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT

CBT therapy was originally developed for treatment of depression. By recognizing the significance of perception in every day thinking, CBT therapy revolutionized the treatment of depression and consequently many other conditions. CBT therapy focuses on how an individual thinks (“cognitive”) and acts (“behavioral”). CBT is a form of psychotherapy (talk therapy) that focuses on how thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes shape feelings and behaviors. Cognitive therapy is usually short-term and centred on helping to deal with a very particular issue.
CBT has been particularly effective for managing general anxiety and depression. Studies have also shown that CBT is a successful treatment for many other issues:

The objective of cognitive behavior therapy is to explain that while a person can’t control everything around them, they can have an impact on how they interpret, react to and deal with them. CBT therapy concentrates on modifying any negative thoughts that can add to and intensify emotional problems, depression and anxiety.
CBT is not founded on what people think may work, but what has been proven to work. CBT is one of the most studied kinds of therapy.
There are three main steps used by a CBT therapist:
- Uncover negative thoughts and emotions
- Recognize how these thoughts and emotions may be resulting in damaging behaviors-beliefs
- Beneficial ways of thinking and behaving to develop a healthier state of mind

CBT combined with appropriate medications has been shown to be more effective than medications alone and have shown not only better results, but a less likelihood of relapse. CBT therapy is usually short-term, and can be in individual or group settings.
