Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT

Demonstrating how to live in the moment, manage stress in a healthy manner, control emotions and improve relationships are the chief objectives of DBT therapy.
DBT therapy concentrates on problem solving and acceptance. It works using the ideas of the dialectical method, which is the concept that accepts contrasting ideas at the same time, like change and acceptance. The therapy teaches that things do not have to be black and white. For those who do not respond well to other treatments, the answer may be DBT therapy.
DBT was initially used to treat borderline personality disorder and persistent suicidal thoughts. But studies have shown that depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic-stress disorder, self-harming, drug and alcohol addiction and other conditions have also been effectively treated with DBT therapy.
DBT concentrates on the practice and development of four main techniques:
- Mindfulness: Existing in the moment. Being aware of thoughts, feelings, physical impressions and the immediate environment. Thoughts in tune with the senses at that moment, as opposed to recalling the past or imagining-worrying about the future. Mindfulness, being cognizant of and in command of the present is an important element of DBT therapy.
- Distress tolerance: Helping to increase tolerance of negative feelings, such as frustration, anger, emotional pain and sadness, until the time comes when the distressing issue can be resolved. DBT teaches distress tolerant skills which include controlled breathing, exercise, relaxation exercises, meditation-prayer and imagery.
- Emotion regulation: Involves approaches that help control and modify extreme emotions that cause difficulties in daily life (in relationships, work, etc.). Recognizing and naming emotions comes first. This not only aids in regulating emotions but in helping to understand and sympathize-emphasize with others.
- Interpersonal effectiveness: Involves communication skills that are positive and respectful. These skills are essential, as communication with others has a great effect on the quality of relationships and the results of social interactions. DBT clients are taught to handle dialogues in a more thoughtful and careful manner, as opposed to responding impulsively because of stress or strong emotions.
DBT is generally made up of any combination of one-on-one therapy sessions, skills coaching group, telephone coaching and a psychotherapist consulting group. The skills group helps to cultivate effective behavioral skills by way of group exercises and homework projects. Assignments requiring the rehearsal of skills to develop abilities for daily life is part of DBT therapy.
